The Dawn from on High

Messianic Prophecy from Isaiah to Bethlehem
“Through the tender mercy of our God, when the day shall dawn upon us from on high.” · Luke 1:78

An inductive study of messianic prophecy in five sessions of about 90 minutes, with marked cuts for a 60 minute evening, written for a leader who is not a theologian and built for a parish room with grandparents, parents, teens and children at one table. Four sessions land on the four weeks of Advent and the fifth waits until after Christmas Day, because the feast does not stop on December 26. Each night the group works an Isaiah passage on its own historical terms first, Assyria and Ahaz and Babylon included, and only then goes hunting for the New Testament text that answers it, so the connection is found out loud rather than announced from the front. On the first night every person seals a written guess to one question, what was Israel actually waiting for; the guesses are opened with ceremony in week three and answered in writing at the last session. Every session builds the strongest honest objection at full strength before pressing it. The mixed ages notes are real design rather than a courtesy: children distribute and unseal the guesses, younger readers take the animals of Isaiah 11, and the oldest person present reads Simeon. Each session carries a Leader Preparation Guide, a Discussion Guide, and a Leader Reference Card listing every passage in order. Scripture follows the Revised Standard Version, Second Catholic Edition. Leader guides and take-home sheets for every session.

The Dawn from on High runs 5 sessions. Every session comes with a complete leader's preparation guide and a printable take-home sheet for the people in the room, and the full text of each night can be read on a phone from the list below. All of it is free to download, print, and share, with no sign up and no cost.

The sessions

Every session below carries three links. Read opens the full session on a phone, Sheet downloads that night's participant take-home sheet, and Leader opens the leader's guide for that session. Nothing is held back and nothing asks for an email address.

Hosting this study

You do not need to be a theologian to lead The Dawn from on High. The leader's guide carries the questions, the answers, and the background, so the group can discover the text together. There is a short guide to hosting a Bible study if this is your first one, and a set of six questions that will help you choose a study if you are still deciding.
