The Stronger One

Tearing Down Strongholds and Walking Free
“when one stronger than he assails him and overcomes him, he takes away his armor in which he trusted.” · Luke 11:22

An inductive study on strongholds, temptation and freedom in Christ in eight sessions of about 90 minutes, written for a leader who is not a theologian. This is the study for the person quietly living inside a habit he cannot break, and it never once asks anyone to say what it is. On the first night each person writes, in one sentence, the wall they most want down, seals the sheet, and brings it back unopened each week; at Session 5 they open it alone, in silence, renounce the lie underneath it, and are pointed warmly toward Confession. In between, the group takes a wall apart the way it was built: the window between suggestion and consent in James, the enemy's three moves in Eden and the same three failing in the wilderness, the armor God issues and wore first in Isaiah, then Confession and the Eucharist, then the daily tactics of the renewed mind. Session 7 is written for the person who fell the week after their best confession in years. Throughout, ordinary temptation, vice, addiction and illness, and rare extraordinary affliction are kept in separate lanes, and anything involving addiction or compulsion is walked toward Confession, a pastor and real professional care. Each session carries a Leader Preparation Guide, a Discussion Guide, and a Leader Reference Card listing every passage in order. Scripture follows the Revised Standard Version, Second Catholic Edition. Leader guides and take-home sheets for every session.

The Stronger One runs 8 sessions. Every session comes with a complete leader's preparation guide and a printable take-home sheet for the people in the room, and the full text of each night can be read on a phone from the list below. All of it is free to download, print, and share, with no sign up and no cost.

The sessions

Every session below carries three links. Read opens the full session on a phone, Sheet downloads that night's participant take-home sheet, and Leader opens the leader's guide for that session. Nothing is held back and nothing asks for an email address.

Hosting this study

You do not need to be a theologian to lead The Stronger One. The leader's guide carries the questions, the answers, and the background, so the group can discover the text together. There is a short guide to hosting a Bible study if this is your first one, and a set of six questions that will help you choose a study if you are still deciding.
