An inductive study in eight sessions of 75 to 90 minutes, written for a leader who is not a theologian. It asks one question and keeps asking it: when Jesus entrusted teaching, authority, and sacraments to his Apostles, how were those gifts meant to reach people born twenty centuries later? The group answers from Scripture read within the Church's Tradition, one piece of evidence at a time, and the study says out loud what each passage establishes and what it does not. It never asks a single verse to carry the whole Catholic case. The eight nights walk from the commission on the mountain in Matthew 28, through the laying on of hands in the Pastoral Letters, the keys given to Peter, the council of Acts 15, the forgiveness of sins in John 20, the Eucharist entrusted until he comes, and Scripture and Tradition held together, to the share in that mission that belongs to every baptized person. One distinction is planted on the first night and settled on the last: a gift meant for every Christian is not the same thing as an office held by every Christian. Every session states the strongest Protestant objection to that night's material at full strength, in a box the leader reads aloud, before the group answers it from the passages. Once a session the group finds a passage on its own before the leader supplies the reference. On the first night each person seals a written guess at what would need to be handed on for Christians a century after the Apostles, and the envelopes open in Session 4. Each session carries a Leader Preparation Guide, a Discussion Guide, and a Leader Reference Card listing every passage in order. Scripture follows the Revised Standard Version, Second Catholic Edition. Leader guides and take-home sheets for every session.
